National Hedgehog Monitoring Programme – Trail Cam Deployment Volunteer

National Hedgehog Monitoring Programme – Trail Cam Deployment Volunteer

Location:
Five Acres Nature Reserve, Allet, Truro, Cornwall, TR4 9DJ
Working from home, training available online and in person.
This year, Cornwall Wildlife Trust are working with Cornwall and Devon Mammal Group to support the National Hedgehog Monitoring Programme, ran by the People’s Trust for Endangered Species.

We are in need of volunteers to help us deploy and collect camera traps at two sites this year: Helman Tor and Hamatethy. The first date for deployment is the 2nd May 2024, which will be held at Helman Tor. More information to follow.

Full training provided by PTES on the first deployment date, therefore no experience is needed. It is expected that deployment could take up to a full day, and due to the (often rather wet!) terrain, a good level of physical fitness is essential.

Commitment:

Any Day

The National Hedgehog Monitoring Programme (NHMP) is an exciting new survey that will, for the first time, give us robust population estimates for our much-loved hedgehogs. By understanding how hedgehog populations are changing over time and in different areas, we can implement much needed conservation measures to help our hogs.

The NHMP uses trail cameras to capture images of hedgehogs (and other wildlife) in different habitats, including urban parks, private gardens, woodlands and farmland. The images will then be processed by a combination of new AI tools and volunteers to identify the animals in them, before they can be analysed by the team. To make the project a success we need help from volunteers to deploy and collect cameras in the field.

NHMP are thrilled to announce that they are coming to Cornwall and Devon, in partnership with Cornwall Wildlife Trust, Cornwall Mammal Group and Devon Mammal Group. The two Cornish study sites are Helman Tor Nature Reserve and Hamatethy. There will be a total of 4 deployment and collection dates this year, with camera traps will be deployed for 30 days at each site. The first deployment date is 2nd May 2024 and will be ran at Helman Tor.

Parts of these sites can be particularly wet or tricky underfoot, therefore wellies are an essential!

It is not essential that you are available for all 4 of the deployment and collection dates – any time you can spare will be much appreciated!
