Looe Island Sustainable Visitor Development Project

Work started on this project in 2020 and despite some delays, caused by the Covid pandemic, is now complete and we will be ready to welcome visitors for the 2022 season in March.

This project has received a substantial part of the funding from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) which has supported;

  • The construction of a new extended jetty along with a new beach landing trolley.  These new facilities have improved the safety for visitors landing on the island and mean that boats can operate in a greater range of weather
  • Smuggler’s Cottage has been fully renovated and will be available for holiday letting later in 2022
  • A new renewable energy system for Looe Island has been created.  Wind and solar and the associated battery storage mean that the use of the old diesel generator is greatly reduced.  The island now has 24-hour electricity which is important for cleaning the drinking water supply
  • The renovation of the main visitor reception area / buildings.  These buildings have had new work to secure them from the elements.  The buildings will host information about the island’s wildlife and history.

The funding from EAFRD has helped to keep Looe Island open for visitors, securing jobs and supporting local businesses.  Additional funds that helped to make this project happen have come from: Anthony Aston Legacy, Bannister Trust, Tanner Trust, Looe Town Council, Cornwall Council Community Chest.
