Escape to Smuggler's Cottage on Looe Island

Enjoy a unique island getaway in the heart of Cornwall Wildlife Trust's Looe Island Nature Reserve. Nestled just off the Cornish coast, Smuggler's Cottage offers a rare opportunity to slow down, switch off and experience the peace and tranquillity of island life.

Wake to birdsong and breathtaking sunrises over the Ranneys, spend your days exploring the island's spectacular scenery and wildlife, and relax in the evening as the sun sets beyond Gribbin Head. Once the day visitors have departed, you'll experience the magic of having this special place almost entirely to yourself.

Smuggler's Cottage sleeps two adults and features a double bedroom, comfortable living area, kitchen and private bathroom. Please note that pets are not permitted on Looe Island in order to protect the island's wildlife and sensitive habitats.

Before You Book

Access to Looe Island is by boat, with arrivals and departures typically taking place around 10:30am. Exact timings will be confirmed closer to your stay. As crossings are dependent on weather and sea conditions, changes or cancellations can occasionally occur at short notice, so we recommend keeping travel plans flexible by a couple of days either side of your booking.

Looe Island is a remote nature reserve, and guests should expect to remain on the island for the duration of their stay. There are no shops on the island, so you'll need to bring all food, drinks and personal items required during your visit.

The cottage includes:

  • Double bed (duvets and pillows provided)
  • Kitchen with ceramic hob, microwave and fridge
  • Shower and compost toilet
  • BBQ (please bring your own charcoal)
  • Digital radio
  • Reasonable 4G mobile reception

As a conservation island, resources are carefully managed. Electricity is supplied through renewable energy systems and water comes from the island's own treated supply. We kindly ask all guests to use these resources thoughtfully during their stay.

There is no TV or Wi-Fi, making Smuggler's Cottage the perfect place to disconnect from everyday life and reconnect with nature.

A full list of what's provided, what you'll need to bring and important guidance for staying on the nature reserve can be found on the Cornwall Wildlife Trust website via the link above. Guests are asked to follow all island guidance, including using the main beach for sea access, helping us protect the wildlife and habitats that make Looe Island so special.

Please find the Accommodation Terms & Conditions here.

We look forward to welcoming you to Looe Island and hope you enjoy an unforgettable island escape!

Mobility

Access to the island involves climbing over the side of the boat onto a narrow portable landing trolley. Please wear sensible footwear. Care is also needed to negotiate the swash of the waves which can cover the trolley. Please note that there is limited assistance to get on/off the boat.

Once landed you will then be led across the sand and shingle beach up a sloping path to the simple visitor centre. Elsewhere on the island some paths are steep, uneven, narrow and slippery, so we recommend wearing appropriate footwear and be aware that there are some steps around the buildings.

Expect changeable weather and bring/wear suitable clothing for the boat crossing (Evie J is a small open fishing boat) and for walking around the island - much of which can be very exposed to the elements.

Binoculars are really useful to bring.
