About the event

Through the Cornwall National Landscapes Natural Beauty and the Beast Project, Cornwall Wildlife Trust is hosting a series of community engagement events designed to help local people connect with the wildlife found along rivers and streams.

Come and join Cornwall Wildlife Trust and the Riverfly Partnership to learn more about Riverflies and their role in water quality monitoring.

Riverflies are known as ‘the canary of our rivers’ because they are strong biological indicators to monitor water quality. They are relatively localised, long-lived and sensitive to pollution. Riverflies (caddisflies, stoneflies and mayflies) live most of their lives as larvae on the bed of rivers before emerging as short-lived adult flies in the spring and summer.

In this free training session, you will learn all about how to monitor for riverflies, how to identify species and what this means for water quality.

The in-person session will include practice of the survey technique, collecting a sample, health and safety tips and how to analyse your sample.
