About the event

ESSENTIAL! - To take part in this course, you must have attended our Seasearch Observer course

As part of Cornwall Wildlife Trust's marine work in St Austell Bay and the Fal and Helford Catchment, we are supporting the local community with a special conservation project, all about protecting the amazing seagrass and kelp on the south coast.

A huge aspect of this project is to develop a team of local volunteers who can monitor the seagrass and kelp for years to come through special snorkel surveys.

This training course will teach you all about seagrass and kelp and their importance for the health of our marine environment. You will also learn survey techniques to assess extent and condition of seagrass and kelp.

The course consists of an evening session online via zoom on Wednesday 15th July and a practical session either in St Austell Bay or the Fal and Helford Catchment on Sunday 19th July (depending on weather conditions).

Mobility

Dependent on chosen location for practicals, based on weather conditions. Likely to include moderate to steep slopes or steps in some cases to access the beach. Beaches themselves are soft sand or shingle and uneven, with a short walk (approximately 200m) from car parks to the waters edge. Kitting up on the shoreline and the snorkelling activity may be challenging for those with limited mobility. Important to be a strong and confident swimmer, as the session could involve swimming over 200m in total.
