The National Cycle Network is a comprehensive network of safe and
attractive places to cycle throughout the UK. It was officially
opened in June 2000 and already covers 5,000 miles. The National
Cycle Network project plans to increase this to 10,000 miles by
2005. One third of the network will be on traffic-free paths, the
rest will follow quiet lanes or traffic-calmed roads.
It is co-ordinated by the charity Sustrans, (the sustainable transport
charity), with the generous support of over 450 local authorities
and other partners. Sustrans work on practical projects to encourage
people to walk, cycle and use public transport in order to reduce
motor traffic and its adverse effects.
They are also targeting Safe Routes to Schools, Home Zones and
other practical responses to the transport and environmental challenges
we face. By using, interactive cycle mapping on their web site,
you can search by town or postcode, choose where to visit and plan
your journey by train, ferry or bike bus to find your route.
