Google Earth is a 3D mapping interface, to the entire planet provide
by Google, best known for their search engine software.
This interactive mapping software allows you to move around the
world to any particular location and using photographs taken from
satellites, view it from space. You can then zoom in closer and
closer until, in some cases, you can see individual cars on the
street, boats in the water, or various buildings and monuments.
Google Earth can be customised according to your own interests,
and this information can then be shared with other users. Roger
Driver, a Cornwall Wildlife Trust volunteer, has kindly plotted
all the Cornwall Wildlife Trust nature reserves and started to add
overlays of map boundaries of our nature reserves. This file can
be downloaded as a Google Earth add on.
The add ons consist of three basic types:
Place marks – a plot on the map for each place of interest,
in our case each nature reserve.
Network links – links from Google Earth to other web
based information. In this case, the specific page on our web
site about that reserve.
Overlays – additional graphical information about the
area. In this case a number of nature reserve boundaries have
been superimposed over the Google satellite tiles to add extra
detail.
Google Earth is free for personal use and no registration is required.
