Education, training and volunteer opportunities with bats
The Cornwall Bat Hospital is very keen to promote the bats’ cause
and is also very involved with education. Ginni’s helpers often
come in the form of students trying to gain work experience. We have
recently taken on "New Deal" trainees who are getting lots
of practical experience and seem to be thoroughly enjoying it.
Training
If you are a student or are at a school local to the hospital then the
following list of opportunities may be of interest:
- We can offer placements for students who wish to do community service
- any age
- We can provide work experience for students interested in small animal
care
- We can organise field trips, locally, with bat detectors
- Small parties of students may visit the bat hospital and be given
a guided tour by arrangement.
- Talks and slide shows
Ginni doesn't have any transport but is willing to visit your school
or organisation to give talks and slide shows if it is local or if transport
can be arranged. These talks can be tailor-made to your requirements
or you can choose from the following:-
- Bats in fact and folklore
- The work of the bat hospital
- British bats
- Biology of bats
- A year in the life of a bat
- Bats of the world and their importance to the environment
- The importance of bats to the environment as pollinators and seed
distributors
- Contribution bats have made to medicine
- The economic importance of bats
Volunteers needed
The Cornwall Bat Hospital is always in need of volunteers to help feed
and care for bats - there is an awful lot to do!
- Let us have your artwork - we are constantly in need of artwork for
posters, illustrations for our magazine and website, banners for
Maisey Day, wall hangings, and designs we can reproduce to sell as
cards and
note paper.
- Craft work and design - we are always grateful for craft items (such
as wooden or fabric bats) which we can sell to raise funds to keep
the hospital going.
- Any good with wood? A number of new wooden cages need to be constructed
to house the bats - design available. Also, one or two exhibition
cages are needed to take to events to display the animals without them
being
harmed - we haven’t even got a design yet.
