A year in the life of a bat

What you can expect British bats to be up to through the year.

January

Hibernating, living on fat reserves built up in the autumn

February

Still hibernating but fat reserves dwindling.

March

There may be some activity and some feeding.

April

Wide awake and feeding at night.

May

Females seeking nursery sites.

June

Babies being born and suckling from their mothers.

July

Growing fast but still suckling.

August

Growing fast but still suckling.

September

Beginning of the mating season. Also bats starting to build up their fat reserves for hibernation.

October

Concentrating on building up fat reserves and seeking suitable hibernation sites.

November

Although still some activity in warm weather, bats will begin to hibernate.

December

Hibernating now until spring.
