Our German twins
Since March 27th 1999 the Cornwall Wildlife Trust has been officially
twinned with the Lower Saxony branch of Naturschutzbund Deutschland (Nature
Protection
Society of Germany) – NABU for short.
NABU is the oldest nature conservation body in Germany. Founded in
1899 by a courageous lady from Baden-Württemberg, Lina Hähnle, NABU
has meanwhile grown up to the biggest non-governmental nature conservation
body in Germany.

Whilst it was originally meant to be a society for birdwatching and
the protection of birds, NABU’s work now covers a wide range of environmental
topics. The work focuses very much on lobbying (environmental input into
political decisions and, for example, planning processes). Public awareness
and environmental education also play an important role, as well as campaigning,
e.g. for bringing nature back into house gardens and for supporting organic
farming.
