One of the main aims of the Cornwall RIGS Group is to raise people’s awareness of Cornwall's geology. Members of the group provide guided walks and talks throughout the year. These and other geological activities are published below and in Cornwall Wildlife Trust's Wild Cornwall and Wild Scilly magazine. You can also find these in the What's On section of this website.

Geology and Mines in the Botallack Area, Penwith.

Booking is essential. Botallack. 10.00am start.

Meet at the Botallack Count House (SW 365333).

A conducted tour exploring the geology and the different types of mineralisation (tin, copper and uranium) in the area, which has several County Geology Sites (RIGS). We will find uranium minerals using a geiger counter, although collecting is not allowed.

Bring a packed lunch, waterproofs and wear strong shoes/boots.

Geology of the Crackington Area.

Crackington. 11.00am start. (No booking necessary). Duration approximately 2.5hours.

Meet at the Beach Car Park, Crackington (SX 143971). Pay and display car park, cafe and toilets available.

Depending on the weather and tides there will be a circular walk of the cliff area followed by a more detailed look at the structural geology of the beach which consists of faulted and folded Namurian Turbidites of the Carboniferous. No geological knowledge required and all are welcome.

Bring outdoor gear/ waterproofs and stout footwear.

Geology around Rough Tor.

Rough Tor, Bodmin Moor. 11.00am start. (No booking necessary). Duration approx 3.5hours.

Meet at the Rough Tor Car Park, (SX 138819). Free car parking.

A circular walk of the Granite Tor to include a bit of geology, archaeology and aerobic excercise, followed by a rest whilst admiring the stunning views from the top. Gentle geology - nothing complicated so all are welcome.

Bring packed lunch. Wear outdoor gear/ waterproofs and stout footwear.

Climate Change in St Austell Bay.

St Austell Bay. 10.30am start. (No booking necessary).

Meet at the Carlyon Bay Upper Car Park, (SX 054522). Western Greyhound Service 525 has a bus stop close by (ask to be put down at the Golf Club).

A look at geological deposits showing how the climate has changed from near-glacial to slightly warmer than present, over the last 150 000 years.

Bring outdoor gear/ waterproofs and strong shoes/boots.

The walk will finish at approximately 12.30 pm at the Spit Beach Car Park (SX 073528). Participants can walk from here into Par for bus and rail links or can return along the beach

The Building Stones of St Austell.

St Austell Town Centre. 6.00pm start. Approximate finish time 7.30 pm.(No booking necessary).

Meet at theSt Austell Bus/Rail Station (SX 015525). Gather in the foyer in front of the booking hall.

St Austell has a wider range of building stones than most Cornish towns. Granites, elvans, greenstones and more will be seen.

Wear suitable warm, waterproof clothing.

Geology of the Coast - Boscastle to Trevalga Circular Walk.

Boscastle. 11.00am start. (No booking necessary).

Meet at Boscastle Visitors Centre (SX 098915). Parking in Pay and Display at Boscastle, toilets and cafes all available.

A gentle introduction to the geology of the coast around Boscastle. Devonian and Lower Carboniferous rocks, their origins and how they ended up where they are now, will be examined. Easy stuff, so just come and join us for the walk and the views.

Bring outdoor gear/ waterproofs and stout footwear.

RIGS events are open to all. Be more climate friendly and help to reduce congestion in Cornwall by car sharing with friends. Field trips are at your own risk. Appropriate clothing and footwear are essential.
