Reptiles
As frogs feature prominently in its diet, the Grass
Snake is often to be
found in moist vegetation close to standing water. It is an excellent swimmer
and can remain submerged for long periods. It hunts both in water, where
tadpoles are favorite items, and on land. The Grass Snake often lays eggs
in rotting vegetation, including compost heaps, the process of decomposition
producing heat which speeds their development.
The Adder seldom lives near water, preferring drier habitats, although
it can swim very well.
The Slow Worm lives in damp, shady places, in burrows or under rocks,
which it sometimes finds near bodies of water.
The Common Lizard can also be found in damp places. When close to water
it may dive in to escape danger, swimming remarkably well and even
submerging or hiding in the bottom mud.
