Nature detectives
If
you really want to find out about animals, what better way than to watch
them in the wild? It will help if you think like a detective and look for
clues.
If you look very carefully at the ground you may be able to make out footprints
in the mud-tracks left behind by animals that you may be able to identify.

Here is a common animal footprint
that you might find.
It belongs to the badger!
If you look carefully in ponds in the spring time you may
see the tadpoles of frogs or toads, or you may even be lucky enough to
see the adults. During the breeding season they are very vocal and they
may travel great distances to reach the pond in which to lay their eggs.
Hundreds of toads are killed on
roads every year on their way to their ponds.
Look carefully at the trees around you. There may be thousands
of animals living in one tree. It may support a whole ecosystem of different
creatures living together, from the tiniest insects to squirrels in holes
and birds nesting high in the branches.
