Main aims of the Cornwall Wildlife Trust
The Cornwall Wildlife Trust is a registered charity
established in 1962; it fulfils a role occupied by no other organisation.
We are concerned solely with the protection of Cornwall's wildlife
and wild places for this and future generations to enjoy.
By protecting
The best protection
you can offer any piece of land is to own it and manage it as a nature
reserve. We have already established
over 50
nature reserves, in which examples
of each of Cornwall's habitats give refuge to nationally rare and
endangered species. Our reserves are protected forever. You can
help us buy Cornwall's
most important wild places by supporting our habitat appeal.
By advising
Our detailed knowledge
of Cornwall's habitats, based on over 30 years of survey work, places
us in a unique position to advise. Our advisory
work includes over 400 consultations each year from the County and
District Councils on planning applications. We play our part in setting
national priorities through the nationwide partnership
of Wildlife Trusts.
By educating
We seek to raise
awareness amongst the adult public of today and, through schools and
youth groups, the decision makers of tomorrow.
As well
as providing a range of educational services. We also run our own
junior club, Fox
Club.
By recording
For effective
nature conservation in Cornwall we need a clear and detailed knowledge
of the county. We hold an extensive ecological
database and
we host the county's Environmental
Records Centre.
By volunteering
The Trust has
literally hundreds of people working for it. The county is divided
into eight branches. Many volunteers work on our reserves
doing practical conservation work. All of the Trust's specialist
groups are made up of dedicated volunteers - this includes the
Dolphin Group,
Seal Group, Otter
Group, Mammal Group, Bat
Group and
many others.
By working together
The Cornwall Wildlife
Trust works hand-in-hand with other organisations such as Natural England, the Environment Agency, The National Trust, the
RSPB, as well as Local Authorities and land owners. The Trust
is a founder member of the Cornwall Biodiversity Initiative, a partnership
of the leading conservation organisations active in Cornwall.
By raising funds
We are always
hard at work raising
money. One of the fund-raising activities close to our hearts
is raising money to buy important sites. Particularly
when they are
threatened
with destruction
by reclamation
and development.
As a charity we receive no
regular government aid and depend on the support of people who care
about wildlife and our Cornish countryside.
We currently have a membership of over
13,000. Quite a few of our members don't actually live in Cornwall
at all, but either visit, have lived here before or have strong
Cornish connections. Some members live as far away as Australia!
