The Great Eggcase Hunt (www.eggcase.org) is a citizen science recording project which encourages people out on to the beach in search of mermaid’s purses, the eggcases of sharks and skate. This project is a Shark Trust initiative which has been running for over 15 years, and has collected over 200,000 records to date. Different species can be identified by observing the shape, size, and presence of features such as curled tendrils, horns or lateral keels. While empty eggcases washed ashore can give a good indication of egglaying grounds, finding them developing in situ enables us to learn more about habitat preference. Just off Hannafore Point is a perfect example of this as numerous catshark eggcases (both Nursehound and Smallspotted Catshark) are frequently deposited. Each embryo will take up to around 9 months to develop, and then will emerge from the capsule as a perfectly formed shark ready to fend for itself.
