Classification
Description:
The reserve is mainly wet meadows with a stream, shallow pool, hedgerows
and woodland.
Characteristic wildlife of this reserve:
Greater tussock sedge forms large, dense clumps, which stand up to
3 ft (or more when the plant is ancient) and out of which grow the leaves
and flowering
stems. Its appearance has been likened to a Yeti! It is found abundantly
in wetlands, grows well with its roots under water, and may provide a safe
refuge for small mammals
In the pond, you may spot toads, distinguished by their warty skin,
or common frogs (smooth skin), which come here to breed in the spring
months
amongst
the white water lilies and yellow flag iris.
The southern marsh orchid is found here in early summer from June to
mid-July, around damp areas of the nature reserve. Look out for the large,
pale pink-violet
to deep red-lilac flowers with a rounded lower lip. The stems are tall
and strong with broad, spear-shaped grey-green leaves.
