Cornwall’s Whale and Dolphin Watch
11th June 2007
Dolphins, basking sharks, porpoises - come to Lands End on Saturday 23rd June 2007 to help in the annual survey of these and other fantastic marine creatures.
An amazing 28 different species of whale, dolphin and porpoises have been recorded in UK waters and Cornwall is in the enviable position of being home to many of them. However, we still know surprisingly little about many of these graceful but often elusive animals. To try to learn more and to monitor these animals, Cornwall Wildlife Trust is inviting you to take part in the National Whale and Dolphin Watch on Saturday 23rd June 2007.
This is an opportunity for everyone to become involved in the research which goes into understanding these magnificent creatures. The results of the watch provide a snapshot of the distribution of whales, dolphins and porpoises around Cornwall and the British Isles and will help inform scientific debate on any change in the range and distribution of species.
The event at Lands End will start at 11am for a 2 hour watch of the surrounding area. Trust staff will give an introductory talk, provide information packs and recording sheets, and will be available throughout the survey to give advise to help you identify any sightings.
Lands End offers one of the best locations in the county to view sea creatures as they feed in the rich waters created by the currents and tides that meet in the area and we hope there will be a good chance that a range of exciting animals will be seen during this watch. There is plenty of car parking (£3.00 fee) and refreshments available at Lands End.
Alternatively, if you are out and about elsewhere sailing, fishing, diving, hiking or just walking your dog – please keep a look out for any wildlife at sea and report any sightings that you may have to our Seasequest South West marine sightings scheme on www.cornwallwildlifetrust.org.uk .
