Fresh water
The
life which is dependent on fresh water is very varied and, at its richest,
a freshwater wetland will support a greater variety and abundance of plants
and animals than most other habitats. Children have always been fascinated
by the teeming underwater life of lakes, ponds, rivers, streams and ditches.
Many naturalists first became interested in wildlife as a result of their
encounters with water life.

Water is sometimes surrounded by extensive wetlands, which are very important
and threatened habitats. Freshwater wetlands of Cornwall include bogs,
wet heathland and estuaries, the special habitats found where rivers meet
the
sea.
