Cornwall Biodiversity Initiative

The Cornwall Biodiversity Initiative (CBI) was launched in 1996 and is a voluntary partnership of organisations, businesses, local authorities, government agencies, groups and individuals. All have the shared objective of working together to protect and enhance Cornwall's wildlife.

The Cornwall Biodiversity Initiative (CBI) has been involved in the production and delivery of the Cornwall Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP). The Cornwall BAP is made up of three volumes, these are:

  • Cornwall’s Biodiversity Volume 1: Audits and Priorities
  • Cornwall’s Biodiversity Volume 2: Action Plans
  • Cornwall’s Biodiversity Volume 3: Action Plans 2004

The CBI have recently reviewed Cornwall's Biodiversity Volume 3: Actions Plans 2004, a copy of this along with a summary document is available to download from our Biodiversity Action Plan page.

Cornwall Biodiversity Initiative have produced a report highlighting the impact of 5 landscape-scale projects on the delivery of Cornwall’s BAP Volume 3 targets and actions: Measuring BAP outcomes from landscape scale projects in Cornwall, this report can be downloaded from the related links section on the right hand side of this page. From this report we can see that the delivery of these landscape scale projects have significantly contributed to some National BAP targets:

  • 4% of the National lowland heathland maintenance target
  • 18% of the National lowland heathland expansion target
  • 3.3% of the National fen maintenance target
  • 4.6% of the National Purple moor grass and rush pasture maintenance target

An update of Volume 3 is currently under production, this 2009 update will take into consideration the changes to the UK BAP and the Cornwall Volume 3 Progress Review . New habitats and species lists have been produced for Cornwall and work is now focusing on producing a new Priority Project list that will sit alongside the action plan.

The CBI steering group meets three times a year to discuss the Action Plans and relevant conservation projects. The agenda and minutes from previous meetings can be downloaded from the related links section on this page.
