UK Biodiversity Action Plan
At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, the UK Government was one of 150 countries that signed the Convention on Biological Diversity. In 1995 they published Biodiversity: the UK Action Plan (BAP), a document that listed national habitats and species of conservation concern, with detailed objectives to help protect and enhance them.
A new UK List of Priority Species and Habitats was published in 2007, this was a result of the most comprehensive analysis ever undertaken in the UK. The conservation approach for these 1150 species and 65 habitats is currently being developed by statutory and non-statutory sectors.
Cornwall Biodiversity Action Plan
In 1996 the Cornwall Biodiversity Initiative (CBI) produced Cornwall’s Biodiversity Volume 1: Audits and Priorities . Following on from the recommendations in this document, Action Plans were produced for the Cornish priority habitats and species and published in Cornwall’s Biodiversity Volume 2: Action Plans .

A further volume, Cornwall
’s Biodiversity Volume 3: Action Plans 2004 , has been produced in line with the UK Biodiversity Action Plan (UK BAP) process. This highlights the UK BAP priority habitats and species that occur in Cornwall and comprises of 25 habitat and 127 species Action Plans, each written by local experts. Cornwall’s Biodiversity Volume 3: Action Plans 2004 guides local conservation work to contribute to UK BAP targets and to ensure that Cornwall’s wildlife continues to be an inspiration for future generations. For hard copies of Cornwall’s Biodiversity Volume 3: Action Plans 2004 please contact Cornwall Wildlife Trust's Local BAP Co-ordinator, contact details below, or download it from the related links section on this page, please be aware this is a very large document (8.8 MB) so may take some time to download.
Following detailed consultation with lead partners and specialist groups a review of progress towards the targets and actions within Cornwall's BAP Volume 3 was undertaken , this progress review highlights areas where local conservation work has made a real impact in reaching County and National BAP targets. The progress review also highlights gaps in delivery and will help to focus future work. The full report and a summary document are available to download on the related links section to the right.
Cornwall Biodiversity Action Plan Volume 3: 2009 Update
Leading on from the progress review the Cornwall's BAP Volume 3 is currently being updated. This update will also take into account the publication of the new UK list of priority habitats and species, and the new England Biodiversity Strategy (EBS) delivery framework. New lists have been produced which contain the UK BAP habitats and species which occur in Cornwall.

The Cornish BAP list now contains:
41 habitats
370 species
As part of the 2009 update of Cornwall’s BAP Volume 3 a series of workshops were held to establish a prioritised list of biodiversity projects. This list has been split into terrestrial and marine, the full list contains 24 projects (17 terrestrial and 7 marine) of these 7 were submitted for consideration in the south west regional delivery plan. The priority projects with spatial data are illustrated on the Map of Priority Projects 2010.
